DECEMBER 1, 2007: FREEPORT, IL- In the conference center of Highland Community College, the farms of the estate of Dorothy and Robert Rimington were put on the auction block totaling 598 acres of mostly tillable land, making it one of the larger land auction opportunities in Northern Illinois. 10 buyers made successful bids on individual tracts or combinations of the 17 total tracts during the two-and-a-half hour sale to gross over $3.5 million for the auction. Robert Rimington accumulated the properties over a lifetime, purchasing his first farm in 1940. Earning a Bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois in 1938, he was a farm loan supervisor for the Farmer's Home Administration of the USDA for 56 years serving Stephenson and Jo Davies Counties during all but a few years of his tenure. It was fitting that the auction was held at HCC. His service to HCC began on the Steering Committee of Freeport Community College. He then served as a HCC College Board of Trustee (Charter Member) for seven years and at various times held positions as chairman and vice chairman. He was a founding member and past President of the Highland Community College Foundation Board. During his opening remarks at the Auction, Paul Rimington, son of Robert and Dorothy, said that "this was not a sad day but the beginning of a new era. Mom and Dad felt that the farms were not theirs but on loan for a period of time, albeit nearly 70 years. It is time to turn over the properties to people who have the desire and skill to manage them." Schrader, the auction company responsible for the sale, has been perfecting its approach to auctioning multiple-tract sales of land for the past 25 years. Schrader has developed a copyrighted, multi-tract method that allows buyers to create the size and configuration of acreage that they desire based on the auction map. Schrader's marketing campaign for this auction reached thousands of potential buyers instantly through their web site, which received 4,871 hits and 1,415 visits for this auction alone. Brochures, newspaper ads, and signs on US 20 successfully promoted this property. Aerial photographs and detailed maps of the individual tracts with descriptions and directions also clearly presented the land to the bidders. In addition to this 598 acre sale in Illinois, the Schrader Company has sold other large land tracts in 2007 including: 5,600 acres in Dodge City, Kansas; 890 acres in DeKalb County, Illinois; 1,914 acres in Knox County, Indiana; 263 acres on Fox Island, New York; 1,800 acres in Tennessee; 2,300 acres in Washington; 1,066 acres in Kosciusko County, Indiana; and 700 acres in Noble County, Indiana.
