Ohio recreational land auction draws hundreds, as property sells for $4.12 million

A standing-room-only crowd jammed into the Athens Community Center Saturday to compete for 2,475 acres of southeast Ohio woodlands, resulting in a sale of the hunting and recreational land for a total of $4.12 million. The auction was conducted by Schrader Real Estate and Auction Company and Murray Wise Associates.

The auction drew more than 350, with more than 150 registered bidders, who competed intensely for several hours for pieces of the land. In the end, the land was divided among 27 successful buyers.

"The seller wisely chose to market this property to appeal to the surrounding communities, offering it in 66 tracts, ranging from two to 175 acres. That opened the way for many hunters and recreational buyers to participate," said President R.D. Schrader. "Bidders ranged from one who purchased two acres to one who combined a number of tracts to buy 830 acres. But most of the buyers purchased less than 100 acres. It was a great auction."

The auction included land in Muskingum, Athens, Meigs and Gallia counties.
